What Does “Move-In Ready” Really Mean?

by Tracy Mathis

We’ve all seen the term “move-in ready” in listings. But what does it actually mean—and what should buyers expect in Baton Rouge and surrounding parishes?

Spoiler: It depends. Here's what to know.

🏠 Basic Definition

A move-in ready home is safe, functional, and clean with no major repairs needed. You could walk in with your belongings and live comfortably from day one.

✅ What “Move-In Ready” Should Include:

  • Working HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems

  • Roof in good condition

  • Fresh paint and clean flooring

  • No major code violations

  • Appliances included (if stated in listing)

🚫 What It Usually Doesn’t Include:

  • Perfectly remodeled kitchen or baths

  • Designer finishes

  • Furniture or décor

  • Warranty on systems or roof (unless specified)

Buyer Tip: Always Get an Inspection

Even if a home is described as move-in ready, a professional home inspection is still crucial. Cosmetic updates don’t always mean structural integrity.

Seller Tip: Want to List as “Move-In Ready”?

We'll walk you through minor updates—like touch-up paint, deep cleaning, or replacing broken hardware—that make a big difference to buyers. It’s one of the easiest ways to increase your home’s appeal.
